6 Different Drummers

CHF Talks for Independent Thinkers

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured, or far away.

—Henry David Thoreau

Hear that low rumble off in the distance? That's the sound of dissent. If you're tired of the political soft touch, the rebel-rousers listed below are banging their drums loud enough to really shake things up, and we've collected them all right here so you can get your groove on with these 6 CHF talks.

For 20 years, CHF has showcased many similarly-skilled political percussionists and other folks not afraid to step to their own beat. If you like what you hear, sign up for our email list and we'll send you similar multimedia content about once a week.

6 "Different Drummer" CHF Talks

  • The iconic Dick Gregory (video above) riffs on his history as a civil rights activist, mayoral candidate, and advocate of both nutrition and environmental stewardship.
  • First Amendment expert Geoffrey Stone kicks off a racy panel on the First Amendment, sex, and obscenity. Topics include sexting and child pornography.
  • Distinguished law scholar Martha Nussbaum considers LGBT relationships as she delivers a riveting overview of her book, From Disgust to Humanity.
  • Dr. Raynard Kington, former deputy director of the NIH, describes the gaps in health care access found at certain intersections of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status throughout the United States.
  • Rashid Khalidi, scholar of Arab Studies, calls for futher scholarly examination of and widespread public education about the Israel-Palestine Conflict.
  • Dr. Paul Farmer recounts the efforts of his organization, Partners in Health, in Haiti. This talk was recorded before the quake: learn what Haiti was facing before everything literally fell apart.
