Recorded on November 14, 2010.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra cellist Katinka Kleijn premieres a new work for solo cello by avant-garde composers Marcos Balter, Megan Beugger, Phyllis Chen, Pablo Chin, Nomi Epstein, Sebastian Huydts, and Du Yun. Titled Oil-Free Blush and jointly commissioned by Kleijn and the Chicago Humanities Festival, the work is inspired by recent findings on the carcinogenic properties of cosmetics. It comprises seven movements, each written by a different composer and titled after a chemical compound found in makeup. Kleijn, who is also a member of the progressive rock band District 97, will discuss the work with moderator Andrew Patner and several of its composers. In this way, the program introduces the Festival audience to a new piece of music while providing insight into the ways contemporary classical music is conceived and created.
