  • ABOUT Lane Alexander

    Lane Alexander is co-founder and director of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project. His career includes work in concert halls, musical theatre, television, film, classrooms and as a community organizer/advocate for percussive dance. Lane recently served on then-Mayor Elect Rahm Emanuel's arts and culture transition team and currently serves as a faculty member/senior advisor at the Beijing Contemporary Music Academy.

FWK was founded in 2007 by Leida “Lady Sol” Villegas, as a professional dance ensemble with a mission to attract global recognition to Chicago’s unique style of footwork. This extreme style is dominantly a lower body movement that evolved as a response to Chicago’s House and Juke music scenes.

    Najwa Dance Corps (NDC) is a company of dancers dedicated to the preservation of dance styles and techniques of different eras as it relates to the African American heritage dance experience.  NDC is under the direction of Najwa I and is considered to be "a live historical dance archive". The repertoire consists of African dance, traditional and modern jazz pieces, tap dance, contemporary dance and hip hop choreography.

    Stick and Move hail from the south side of Chicago and were BET’s (Black Entertainment Television) 2005 Spring-Bling National Dance Champions.  Under the direction of Jonathan St. Clair, this unique mix of elite dancers, choreographers, and acrobats offer a slew of talents, education, and skills. Stick and Move has traveled the world teaching, performing and spreading the positive message of Hip Hop.

    Wheeling High School's Crucial Step Clique (CSC) is one of the elite high school step teams in Illinois.  With three IDTA Regional Championships and three IDTA State Titles, CSC provides audiences with intricate rhythms, world-class precision, and a flair for showmanship.  CSC continues to excite crowds with their combination of step and hip-hop, living up to their motto "It's hard work being CSC". Current company directors are Lauren Miles and Tanisha Brewer.

Whats more, many of these dance forms have done double-duty as social dances, in dance halls and clubs, and on the stage. Why has our culture been such an engine for new movement? How is innovation in dance related to our American responses to historical events and social attitudes? There is no better tour guide through this particular slice of American history than Lane Alexander, Chicago Human Rhythm Project founder and artistic director.
