  • ABOUT Raymond Walter Apple

    Raymond Walter “Johnny” Apple Jr. (1934-2006) corresponded from more than a hundred countries for The New York Times beginning in 1963, reporting on the Vietnam War, the Iranian revolution, and the fall of the Communist governments in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and East Germany. He covered ten presidential elections and eight U.S.-Russian summits and served as a bureau chief in Saigon, Nairobi, London, and Moscow. From 1993 to 1997, he was a Washington bureau chief. He wrote on European and American cities in the books Apple’s Europe and Apple’s America and wrote on food and wine.
