As the New York Times has noted, “Bill Hayes has an unusual set of skills: part science writer, part memoirist, part culture explainer.” The author of three works of narrative nonfiction as well as numerous articles and essays, he has gone to unusual lengths in pursuit of his subjects. Hayes spent a year studying anatomy and ultimately performing full cadaver dissection as research for his acclaimed book on the author of Gray’s Anatomy, Henry Gray. In this illustrated presentation, Hayes retraces his steps in writing each of his three books—Sleep Demons, Five Quarts, and The Anatomist—and discusses the varying approaches he has taken in writing about the human body.
