Ania Loomba, professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, introduces us to her path-breaking research into William Shakespeare, race, and colonialism. Loomba, who is Indian, approaches Shakespeare from a self-consciously non-European perspective, exploring how 16th- and 17th-century concepts of race were expressed and codified in the Bard’s plays. As a result, she challenges centuries of critical literature on Shakespeare and sheds new light on such key figures as Othello and Shylock.
