Books Unbound presents a special session at YOUMedia in partnership with mentors from the Digital Youth Network. This hands-on workshop will give participants an opportunity to explore The Scarlet Letter and Fight Club through various creative digital mediums that can be brought back to the classroom. These forms may include creating a video, recording a song, illustrating a book cover, or designing a graphic novel. By stepping into the shoes of the teenage patrons of the YOUMedia lab, participants will discover exciting and relevant ways for students to convey the impact of a piece of literature.
Experts from the Digital Youth Network will facilitate this interactive, experiential session. The Digital Youth Network focuses on enhancing digital literacy for adolescents through activities that encompass school, home, and after-school learning environments. Mentors serve as role models who guide participants in the development of increased technical skills and provide leadership, encouragement, and knowledge of professional opportunities. The model also focuses on establishing close ties to the school curriculum while pushing students to explore new ways of engaging with their world.
The workshop will take place at YOUMedia, housed at the Harold Washington Library Center. YOUMedia features endless ways for teens to connect with books, media, mentors, and community organizations. This engaging space provides access to cutting edge media tools, offers workshops on a wide variety of topics, and facilitates adolescent learning in a positive, supportive, and innovative environment.
