Rarely does one encounter a writer who plumbs the intricacies of contemporary life with such winsomeness and heart. From the poignant and provocative portrait of single parenthood in The Good Mother to her latest novel, The Lakeshore Limited, a riveting and unexpected meditation on love and art in the shadow of 9/11, Sue Miller’s writing nimbly explores our familial, cultural, and political landscapes. A critically-acclaimed novelist and teacher at Amherst, Radcliffe, and MIT, Miller was also chair of PEN New England, with which she fostered literacy programs for homeless shelters and established writing programs for urban high schools and prisoners.
In this program, CHF honors this bestselling fiction writer as the 2011 Doris Conant Lecturer. Miller discusses both her creative and community work in conversation with Victoria Lautman.
This annual lecture honors Festival supporter Doris Conant in recognition of a generous gift to the Chicago Humanities Festival by the Conant Family Foundation.
This event is presented in partnership with First United Methodist Church at The Chicago Temple.
