Join us at the Chicago Humanities Festival’s 16th annual Summer Institute for Teachers (SIT). Teachers love SIT because it gives them an opportunity to be students themselves and to learn from leaders in their field in an intimate, intensive environment. The aim of SIT is to nourish teachers’ love of learning, as well as introduce them to current research and give them new tools for their classroom.

At this year’s Summer Institute for Teachers, CHF returns to YOUmedia and partners with Facing History and Ourselves. Using the fall 2012 One Book, One Chicago selection, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, SIT participants will work with the digital media mentors at YOUmedia to deepen their understanding of and engagement with the book.

Highlights of SIT 2012 Literature and Citizenship:
The Book Thief provides a rich literary canvas to discuss issues of civic participation, tolerance, courage, morality, and civil disobedience.

  • Staff from Facing History and Ourselves will introduce “Choosing to Participate,” an acclaimed civic initiative and exhibition designed to encourage young people to think deeply about the importance of participating in a democratic society. (The exhibition opens at the Harold Washington Library Center in August 2012.)
  • For those teachers who are new to SIT, “Literature and Citizenship” will introduce various digital media—graphic design, audio interviews, creative writing, video, music—and examine how these forms provide students with fresh and expanded opportunities to engage in narrative, persuasive, and informational communication.
  • For those teachers who participated in SIT 2011, “New Media Literacy,” SIT 2012 will be a chance to dig deeper and learn more about the range of digital media that compel their students.
  • An extended discussion about assessment and evaluation of digital media produced by students will be incorporated into the session.

Lunch will be provided both days. 10 CPDUs are provided for completion of the workshop.

The Summer Institute for Teachers is presented in partnership with YOUMedia, a program of the Chicago Public Library, and Facing History. CHF professional development programs for teachers are generously sponsored by the Polk Bros. Foundation.
