    Dr. Shashi Tharoor is Chairman of Dubai-based Afras Ventures, a prize-winning author of ten books, and a widely-published critic, commentator and columnist. In 2007 he concluded a nearly 29-year career with the United Nations, culminating as the Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information. In 2006, he was India’s candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as UN Secretary-General. In May of 2009, he won a seat in India’s Parliament and is currently serving as a Minister of State.

In 2005, former United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Shashi Tharoor envisioned the shape of tomorrow's UN, from structure to aid programs. Tharoor began career at the UN in 1978 on the shaff of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and remained at the UN through 2007.
