Past Events: The Future of the United Nations (2005)
Shashi Tharoor earned his doctorate in 1978 at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomancy at Tufts University. He began his career at the United Nations (UN) that year working on the staff of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva. His career with the UN culminated with his position of Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, which he held from 2001 until 2007. Tharoor is now chairman of the Dubai-based Afras Ventures, a prize-winning author of many books, and a widely published critic and commentator. In 2006, he was India’s candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as United Nations Secretary-General. In May 2009, he won a seat in the Indian Parliament and is currently serving as a Minister of State.
