Richard White is the Margaret Byrne Professor of American History at Stanford. He is the recipient of a MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships, and he was named an Andrew Mellon Distinguished Professor. His latest book, Railroaded, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History, the Francis Parkman Prize, and the Gomroy Prize of the Business History Association.
