205 | David Treuer on Native American Resiliency

About the Event:

There is a tendency to view Native American life through the lens of the past, and through the history of their violent treatment, including land seizures, forced assimilation and other abuses, up to and including the massacre at Wounded Knee. Ojibwe novelist and anthropologist David Treuer presents a counter-narrative in his new work The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present. Treuer brings into focus the strategies of survival, involving the preservation of language and culture, that inform the contemporary circumstances and exertions of identity by Native Americans.
