Musical Legacies of the South Side
About the Event:
Chicago’s South Side has long been a place where musical traditions are passed on and transformed. Musician, composer, and bandleader Marquis Hill’s project Made in Chicago pays tribute to the city's jazz innovators who inspired the cross-genre musical explorations that have defined the output of Hill and his cohort. Join Hill and saxophonist and composer Ernest Dawkins for a performance and conversation about the intergenerational legacy of Chicago’s progressive jazz scene.
This event will kick-off the long-running Englewood Jazz Festival, a neighborhood institution lead by Ernest Dawkins, one of the elders to whom Hill pays tribute. The program is a part of Chicago In Tune, a new citywide festival celebrating music in the key of Chicago.
This program is funded in part by a grant from Illinois Humanities, with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this project do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Illinois Humanities, the Illinois affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a statewide nonprofit organization that activates the humanities through free public programs, grants, and educational opportunities that foster reflection, spark conversation, build community, and strengthen civic engagement.
